Immigrant Rights and How to Prepare: Protecting Emotional Well-Being

Recently, I attended a meeting with the Coalition for Immigration Justice of Southwest Florida, where important information was shared regarding immigrant rights and how individuals and families can prepare in case of an unexpected situation.

The purpose of sharing this information is to increase awareness and support preparedness within the community.

Key Information to Be Aware Of

During the meeting, several important points were discussed that individuals and families should keep in mind:

    • Individuals have rights during interactions with immigration authorities
    • It is important to remain calm and avoid signing documents without understanding them or speaking with an attorney
    • Always have an identification with you since the authorities need to know who you are.
    • Families are encouraged to have a preparedness plan in place
      • This is very important since you don’t want your family to have additional stressors, especially financial.  I learned from one of my clients that her husband’s savings, while he was detained, drastically reduced the financial stressors they could have confronted.
      • In case you are detained, do you know how you will take care of your children?  It is very important to have a guardianship document prepared and signed.
    • Important documents should be organized and accessible
    • Identifying trusted contacts and resources can be helpful in times of uncertainty
      • Memorized the contact information of an immigration attorney for you to call in case of being detained.

Taking these steps in advance can help reduce uncertainty and provide a greater sense of stability during difficult moments.

This information is intended to help individuals feel more informed and better prepared.

    Emotional Impact of Immigration-Related Stress

Situations involving immigration concerns can create significant emotional distress. Individuals may experience:

    • Anxiety and persistent worry
    • Fear of separation from family members
    • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping
    • Increased stress within the household

Children, in particular, may be especially affected, even when they are not directly involved in the situation. They may sense uncertainty and experience emotional or behavioral changes.

Understanding the emotional impact of these situations is an important part of supporting overall well-being.

The Role of Mental Health Evaluations

Mental health evaluations can help document the emotional and psychological impact of immigration-related stressors. These evaluations are often used to provide a clear, professional understanding of how individuals and families are affected.

As a licensed clinical social worker, I provide mental health evaluations for immigration cases with a trauma-informed and professional approach, while maintaining a neutral and objective perspective.

    Final Thoughts

Staying informed and prepared can make a meaningful difference—not only in practical terms, but also in supporting emotional stability for individuals and their families.
